2026 MEADFA Conference Programme Announced, Pre-Registration Open for Landmark 25th Anniversary Edition in Rabat

The Middle East & Africa Duty Free Association (MEADFA), has announced the programme for its 2026 Conference, bringing together leading figures from across the Middle East, Africa and the global travel retail industry for its landmark 25th anniversary edition.

Taking place from 15–17 November 2026 at the Four Seasons Hotel Rabat at Kasr Al Bahr, the conference will be held in Morocco for the first time, marking an important new chapter for MEADFA as it strengthens its engagement across Africa’s dynamic and fast-growing travel retail markets. The event will combine two days of conference content with a programme of networking and social events, providing a platform for industry leaders to exchange insights, share perspectives and build new connections.

An insightful programme

The 2026 programme will offer a broad perspective on the evolving travel retail landscape across the Middle East and Africa, with sessions examining regional air traffic and passenger growth, the evolving opportunities across African markets and the changing retail landscape. Highlights include an MEA air traffic outlook, exploring the region’s aviation and passenger trends, and Africa in focus, bringing together industry voices to examine the continent’s growing potential. The programme will feature contributions from senior leaders across airports, retailers, brands, tourism, technology and industry organisations, including ACI Africa, Africa Tourism Association, Amadeus, Avolta, Dubai Duty Free, Heinemann, Lagardère Travel Retail and Qatar Airways, alongside experts from Oliver Wyman and The Moodie Davitt Report.

Today, the Middle East and Africa Duty Free Association (MEADFA) had the opportunity to present at the ACI-Africa Regional Conference & Exhibition which took place in Mombasa. MEADFA President Sherif Toulan presented the latest overview of the sector in the region. He outlined that duty free and travel retail (DFTR) revenues in Africa sunk by 64% year-on-year in 2020 (to US$320 million) after experiencing growth of +8.8% year-on-year in 2019. However, he noted that we are already seeing recovery and bounce back across the region as international travel slowly returns.

Middle East & Africa Duty Free Association signs up to m1nd-set B1S recovery monitor

MEADFA, the Middle East and Africa Duty Free Association is the latest industry trade association to sign up to m1nd-set’s B1S Covid recovery monitor initiative. MEADFA’s decision follows the recent announcements by both the Americas associations ASUTIL and IAADFS as well as the European Travel Retail Confederation (ETRC) that they are joining forces with m1nd-set for the research partnership to ensure their respective members benefit from the traffic and shopper insights data. The B1S recovery monitor is a complimentary service provided by the Swiss research agency, which will comprise quarterly reports with key traffic trends and relevant shopper insights, tailored to each regional association, from m1nd-set’s proprietary Business 1ntelligence Service (B1S) data tool.

At its meeting earlier this month, the Board of the Middle East & Africa Duty Free Association decided to cancel the 2020 MEADFA Conference. As a result of the current political uncertainty in the region, the Board of MEADFA has decided that the 2017 MEADFA Conference will not go ahead in Beirut as planned. The event will be rescheduled to take place in the first quarter of 2018, at a date and venue to be confirmed shortly. Delegate fees will be reimbursed in full to all registered delegates, unless they instruct MEADFA to retain their payment against participation at the conference in early 2018.

The 2017 MEADFA Conference will proceed as scheduled in Beirut from November 20-21 at the Phoenicia Hotel. Amidst the recent changes in the government, the Minister of Tourism H.E. Avedis Guidanian immediately issued an official letter to MEADFA reassuring its continuing support of the upcoming event. According to H.E. Guidanian,“The resignation of Prime Minister Saad Hariri has no impact on the security or the economic stability of the country. We reassure that all Lebanese parties are as attached to the country’s security as its stability. It is this desire that protects us today and makes our country a safe and stable destination.”

The secret to future success for duty free and travel retail in the Middle East and Africa will depend on redefining the duty free promise, according to Aer Rianta International CEO Jack MacGowan. Speaking on day two of the MEADFA conference, managed by TFWA, he suggested that the industry needed to foster positive perceptions of the duty free offer through imaginative and engaging marketing initiatives. ‘Customers are not as engaged or excited as they used to be,’ he stated. ‘The easiest thing to do is to cut prices, but that’s not what all customers want. On average, only one in four customers benchmark for prices, yet we still focus on discounting as a key response to drive passenger average spend.’
